Shown only this Friday night, “Deliver US from Evil” offers a powerful look inside the mind of a former priest and convicted child molester.

The 90 minute documentary was brought to Charleston through Darkness to Light. The film’s creator, Amy Berg, was awarded the group’s Voice of Courage award at Thursday’s annual gala.

Friday, Darkness to Light brought a free showing of the film, to West Ashley’s South Windermere Cinemas.

The film profiles Oliver O’Grady, a Roman Catholic priest who was convicted of lewd and lascivious acts against minors in 1993. It’s estimated he molested hundreds of young boys and girls throughout northern California.

"It was provocative, to say the least," says movie-goer Nathaniel Hoyt. "I am a practicing Catholic, so it just peaked my curiosity. It's certainly going to give me a lot to think about at mass on Sunday."

The film not only focuses on the crimes committed by O’Grady, but also on how the Catholic Church covered up his crimes. Those crimes against children hit home with many of those watching it on the big screen.

"I was abused between ages 6 and 10," says Ann Brentwood, who is now the southeastern coordinator for SNAP, the Survivors Network of those abused by Priests. "When you are sexualized at that early age, you are not emotionally or mentally equip to handle being sexualized. You don't know what to do with that."

In the film, O’Grady's victims band together to better understand. Tonight’s audience came together to support the cause.

"I think it's the worst crime I could think of," says Hoyt. "If that's the case, it's probably the most noble fight in which you can engage."

Oliver O’Grady was convicted in 1993.

He served seven years of his 15 year sentence.

He now lives in Dublin, Ireland.
