Thanks for support

Letter to the Editor
The Charleston Post and Courier

On behalf of Darkness to Light, I want to thank the community of Charleston for its continued support of our organization -- support that has nurtured our growth and enabled us to spread our message of hope and healing to the tri-county area and beyond.

Having "The View" broadcast live from Charleston and award our organization $25,000 was a great honor, but the greatest honor of all has been the generous support of the people in this community who made it possible.

Only with the help of the local media, the community agencies, the creative talent, the financial supporters, and the governing administration of Charleston has Darkness to Light been able to educate adults across the country that we all must work together to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Specifically, we want to acknowledge the following for their support:

  • The local media, including Skirt Magazine, Charleston Business Journal, The Post and Courier, Comcast, Jan Jacobson, Jane Murray, Charleston Magazine, Channel 2, Clear Channel Communications, Citadel Communications, Channel 5, and especially WCIV Channel 4 and Suzanne Teagle.
  • Our local agencies and organizations, such as the Low Country Children's Center, People Against Rape, Charleston Hotline, 211, MUSC's National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center, MUSC's Victims Assistance Program, Children's Medical Assessment Center, Safe Moves, DSS, Mental Health, Charleston County solicitor's office, College of Charleston, Kappa Delta sorority, and College Students Against Child Sexual Abuse.
  • The creative talent of Stewart Birbrower, Ron Smalls, Hunter Hill, Andy Hunt, John Barnhart, Cathy Townsend and Cindy Tew.
  • Our many financial supporters too numerous to name.
  • Our local and federal lawmakers, including Sen. Ernest Hollings, Sen. Lindsey Graham, the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, Rep. Henry Brown, Rep. James Clyburn and Mayor Joe Riley.

And a huge thanks to our chairman of the board, John G. Davis.

Our outreach is national, but the heart and soul of this organization is right here in the Lowcountry.
