Amy Berg, writer-director-producer of the documentary "Deliver Us From Evil," the story of pedophile Father Oliver O'Grady, will be presented the 2006 Voice of Courage Award during ceremonies at 6:30 tonight at the Circle of Light Gala in Marion Square.
The event is sponsored by the local Darkness to Light organization.
Berg's film states that for more than 30 years O'Grady "abused countless children who were in his care and whose families had his trust" in various Northern California parishes. The filmmaker was able to persuade O'Grady to participate in the making of "Deliver Us From Evil," which juxtaposes an interview with O'Grady (wherein he admits his crimes) with the stories of those who survived his abuse. However, O'Grady delivers his account with little more than trace elements of remorse while describing his crimes with a sociopath's detachment, as if rape and molestation were trifles.
But Berg, a veteran of CNN and CBS, finds the story's real villains in the church hierarchy, "who refused to acknowledge error or admit a mistake even when they were caught red-handed."
The film will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday at the South Windermere Cinemas.
