The Health and Education Appropriations Bill for 2008

PLEASE URGE YOUR U.S. SENATORS TO PASS THE HEALTH AND EDUCATION APPROPRIATIONS BILL FOR 2008, AS ESSENTIAL FUNDING FOR CHILD SEXUAL PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE INCLUDED IN THE PENDING BILL!

On October 15, the United States Senate will begin debate on legislation that provides funding for the majority of health, education and social services programs operated by the Federal government in 2008. The bill, S. 1710, the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (Labor/HHS) appropriations bill, currently includes funding for child sexual abuse prevention training that is critical for Darkness to Light to continue its mission to train adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to such abuse. In addition, the bill contains funding for a variety of programs that support the health, education and welfare, and protection of children.

Senators are expected to debate the bill on the Senate floor for approximately one week before voting to approve the final bill. The White House is threatening to veto the bill because its total cost of the programs in the bill are $11 billion more than the President wants to spend. While the Administration is spending $12 billion PER MONTH for war efforts, the President is asking that taxpayers cut funding for health, education and human services programs by $11 billion over the course of A YEAR.

It is important that as many Senators as possible vote IN FAVOR of the bill so that The Administration is aware of the support for the programs funded in the bill. While only 51 votes are needed to pass the bill, over 60 votes in favor of the measure would be needed to over-ride a potential Presidential veto. Thus, the President is less likely to veto the bill if it is approved by 60 or more votes.

Please write both of your U.S. Senators and urge them to approve S. 1710, the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services and Education funding bill for 2008. Tell your Senators that failing to provide adequate funding for child sexual abuse prevention is no way to save money. Rather, providing funding for PREVENTION TRAINING saves billions of dollars in costs to American taxpayers down the road.
