The Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau awarded seven of its annual Golden Pineapple Awards (which are actually plaques, not pineapples) last week to businesses or individuals that did some first-class work for Lowcountry tourism last year.
Kiawah Island Golf Resort garnered a pineapple for securing and hosting the World Cup of Golf in November. Tiger didn't come, but the TV cameras did.
Sen. Glenn McConnell got one for his tireless efforts to get the Hunley sailors laid to rest with military honors -- an event that drew about 20,000 Civil War buffs to town.
From Darkness to Light, a local nonprofit designed to fight the sexual abuse of children, got a CVB pineapple for luring the five New York gabbers of television's "The View" to town. "Bachelor Bob" showed up, but more
importantly, Mayor Joe Riley, Charleston Grill Executive Chef Bob Waggoner and the Lowcountry's own Hootie and the Blowfish turned out to represent the city.
Fort Sumter Tours won a pineapple for luring about 40 executives to town who decide what trips banks promote in their loyalty programs.
Other recipients were Lawrence Thompson, Mayor Joe Riley's right hand man; Gary Edwards, managing director of Coastal South Carolina USA; and Toni Kucish, who oversaw renovation of the CVB's
new digs on King Street as superintendent of Hill Construction Co.
