The long-standing and bitter rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox has spilled to Charleston and highlights a four-game series between the RiverDogs and Greenville Bombers that begins Friday.
The Bombers, formerly from Columbia, make their first of two visits to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. This is the first year of the Bombers affiliation with the Red Sox.
And in traditional RiverDogs fashion, the Red Sox will be spoofed, as will the rivalry, as the Promotions Department has lined up numerous activities, including several surprises.
Friday night's contest is part of a double-header at Riley Park as The Citadel plays host to Charleston Southern. All fans in attendance are permitted to stay for the RiverDogs game free of charge but must move to the general admission section.
Friday Night Fireworks Sponsored by Sprint will conclude the game that starts at 7:05 p.m. and begins with team co-owner Mike Veeck holding a book signing for his initial written work, Fun is Good. The RiverDogs will also be wearing throw-back uniforms.
But the promotional agenda for the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is lengthy and begins with special seating sections for both sets of loyal fans. The concession stands will feature New England "chowda", Boston Baked Beans and Fenway Franks (New York-style hot dogs are already on the menu). Vendors roaming the stands will don both New York and Boston gear.
Fans may have the chance to release steam from the week's work and go a few rounds with former Yankees coach and Boston skipper Don Zimmer and former Red Sox star Pedro Martinez as children's punching bags will be graced with the face of each.
Saturday's game, also part of The Citadel CSU doubleheader, is slated to start at 7:05, and will feature the promotion "Win the Boss's Money". A helicopter will hover over the facility after the contest and will spread free money on the field to those who qualify.
Sunday's game, which again follows The Citadel and CSU contest and is slated to begin at 4:05, is another Family Sunday as kids will be permitted to play catch in the outfield prior to the game and run the bases afterwards. It is also the First Dog Day of the season where fans may bring their canine companions to The Joe for the game.
On Monday at 7:05 p.m., the RiverDogs and Bombers will conclude their four-game set with another Dogs For a Cause Day, this time featuring the Darkness to Light organization. It will also be Youth Baseball Night that is highlighted by a pregame parade that begins at 6:30 p.m.
And look for the Yankees-Red Sox theme to be played throughout the four-game series.
