Circle of Light Gala 2008

The Circle of Light Gala continued its trek around the world by making a stop in New York City. On Thursday, November 20, 2008, Marion Square transformed into Central Park, as Darkness to Light hosted its 7th annual fundraising gala in downtown Charleston.

This glamorous evening began with specialty drinks at the SoHo Cocktail Party at 6:30. Guests enjoyed a silent auction and entertainment. Graffiti artists, break dancers and other street performers engaged guests in high energy acts. Sponsors and Zenith Club members were escorted into the gala by horse and carriage.

Dinner was prepared for 600 guests by 15 of Charleston's most talented and generous chefs under the main event tent. Once again, PDA's spectacular visual displays and Soiree's breathtaking décor took the guests a thousand miles away from Charleston. The night also featured the big band sounds of The Joe Clark Orchestra and a surprise performance during the grand finale that completed the New York experience. In the main event tent, guests placed their bid on the many luxurious live auction items including vacations to Cabo San Lucas, Costa Rica and Saint Marteen. Heather Speare won a brand new Volvo, generously donated by Volvo of North America. Gala Picture 04

Gala Picture 06 Darkness to Light presented the prestigious Voice of Courage Award to Olympic swimmer Margaret Hoelzer. A month after winning three medals in the Beijing Olympics, Hoelzer went public with her story of sexual abuse as a child. The Voice of Courage Award honors courageous individuals like Hoelzer who bring the issue of child sexual abuse to light, helping others overcome and solve this problem. Darkness to Light presented a corporate Voice of Courage award this year to WCIV, celebrating outstanding support and influence by a company devoted to impacting the issue of child sexual abuse.

Following dinner and the conclusion of the auction, Studio 54 opened up for guests to show off their best disco moves.

The Circle of Light Gala would not have been possible without the support of Volvo of North America and its other sponsors, PDA, Soiree, Snyder Rentals, CNN, and Southern Wine & Spirits of South Carolina and Perrier Jouet. Darkness to Light also extends their gratitude to 39 Rue de Jean, Charleston Grill, COAST, Fat Hen, FIG, Grill 225, j.b.c, Langdon's Restaurant and Wine Bar, McCrady's, MUSE Restaurant and Wine Bar, Oak Steakhouse, The Ocean Room, Sea Island Grill, Tristan, Wentworth Grill, Virginia's on King. Over the past seven years, the Circle of Light Gala has raised over 2 million dollars towards Darkness to Light's mission. This national nonprofit organization educates adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. They are now serving communities in 48 states and 9 countries.
